Pac-Man. Rubik\u2019s Cube. Post-it notes. What do all these things have in common? This year marks 40 years since their debut into the market. But here at Carolina Cat, there are two other names we can add to that list \u2013 John Hood and Greg Bradley. This year John and Greg celebrate 40 years of service to Carolina Cat.<\/p>\n

Hired in June of 1980, John and Greg were the second class of Carolina Tractor and Equipment\u2019s Sales and Management leadership program. In 1980, Caterpillar was just entering the compact equipment business. This included the release of the first D3, 931 and 910 loaders. Caterpillar was focused on entering this new business, and as a result, both John and Greg\u2019s early roles were focused on selling compact equipment prior to moving into other roles.<\/p>\n

Greg Bradley<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"Greg began his career serving as a territory sales representative in the Asheville area. He served in this role from 1980 \u2013 1985 before he had an opportunity to move to Hickory and take the sales territory there. Due to some shifting of roles, Greg\u2019s territory included eight counties, including some of his previous territory. He served as the only sales representative in this area for many years.<\/p>\n

In Greg\u2019s territory, a lot of the business was focused in the governmental, landfill and forestry markets. In his time in the industry, he has seen a lot of changes in the equipment and introduction and improvement of the technology in the machines. From going from mechanical controls in the 1980s to hydraulic mechanical, to hydraulic electronic, it has been fun for Greg to learn, evolve and grow with the industry.<\/p>\n

In addition to the technological advances of the machines, over Greg\u2019s 40 years, he has seen significant changes to the product line. \u201cWe had to adapt and change to different products, different businesses and different industries,\u201d Greg shared. \u201cBy the year 2000, the product line had probably doubled, and in ten years after that, probably tripled.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Greg\u2019s perspective, the product line that most changed the life of a Cat salesperson was the addition of the compact line of equipment. \u201cCat did it right \u2013 over time, we have the least expensive machine to own,\u201d Greg commented. While customers can often get a competitive compact machine for less cost up-front, the machine is not likely to last as long. \u201cThe applications our machines are subject to are hard on a machine \u2013 it\u2019s not about building it cheaper; they need to be built to last.<\/p>\n

When asked what kept him at Carolina Cat for 40 years, Greg\u2019s response was simple and direct. \u201cEveryone that works for Carolina Cat is the cream of the crop. It\u2019s a great organization, and a great family, to work for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg shared that the longevity of dealership\u2019s ownership was noteworthy \u2013 something that none of our competitors can claim. Many competitive dealerships have changed hands throughout the years. As the business has grown and evolved over the years, he never felt there were any situations that it wasn\u2019t easy to understand why the decisions were made or things took place the way they did \u2013 a credit to the leadership at Carolina Cat.<\/p>\n

For Greg, being at Carolina Cat for 40 years can all be summed up in one sentence \u2013 \u201cIf you\u2019re going to be with a Cat dealer, you might as well be the best!\u201d<\/p>\n

John Hood<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"John began his career as a territory sales representative in the Greensboro area before transitioning into the Charlotte territory. He served from 1980 \u2013 2002 as a sales representative before moving into a sales management function.<\/p>\n

After over 20 years in the field, John became the used equipment manager in 2002. He served in this role for about a year before he was asked to take on responsibility for both new and used for six months while the company searched for a new equipment manager. Moving into the managerial roles was not something John took lightly. \u201cIn that role, you start to become the manager of your friends and peers,\u201d John shared. \u201cThat\u2019s not always easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, John was selected as the new equipment manager and served in this role until moving into his current position as the used equipment manager in 2008. He was drawn to the used side of the business because there are opportunities to buy and sell equipment and keep the salesman mentality alive. The used equipment business is always changing, especially during economic downturns where used equipment is in high demand.<\/p>\n

John reflected on his past 40 years fondly. He is grateful for the opportunities he has been given and met a lot of great customers along the way. There have been a lot of good changes, and he has watched the industry, and himself, adapt in a positive way over the years.<\/p>\n

When asked the secret to his success over the years, his response was simple. \u201cI\u2019ve always tried to spend the Weisiger\u2019s money as if it was my own,\u201d John commented. \u201cI\u2019ve always worked hard at that. And they\u2019ve always been good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, John hopes that through his actions he makes a difference \u2013 whether that be for a customer, salesperson or employee. \u201cI ask myself two simple questions: Have we made a difference? Or have we helped others make a difference?\u201d John shared. \u201cI hope I\u2019ve done that.\u201d<\/p>\n
