Applications & Industries

Caterpillar® combined heat and power (CHP) technology provides a clean and reliable solution for generating power and thermal energy.

Caterpillar Power Generation Systems offers fully engineered combined heat and power generators, engines and other solutions, which provide a clean, efficient and reliable approach to generating power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. Cat combined heat and power systems offer considerable environmental benefits when compared with purchased electricity and onsite-generated heat.

By utilizing the heat byproduct of electricity generation, Cat CHP generators can be designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility. Cat CHP systems are integrated so that waste heat is recovered and used for heating, cooling, dehumidification and other processing applications. This advanced technology decreases energy costs and increases efficiency by up to 90%. Less fuel needs to be consumed to generate the same amount of energy, resulting in fewer emissions.

We have the experience and capability to engineer the right Cat CHP engine to meet your requirements; we provide sizing and evaluation of your electrical load profile and assessment of your heat demand.

Landfill Gas Applications

Landfill gas is made up of about 50% methane, which is the main component of natural gas, about 50% carbon dioxide, and a small percentage of non-methane organic compounds. This gas is created when organic waste in a municipal solid waste landfill decomposes. Rather than letting the landfill gas escape into the air Cat landfill gas engines can capture and convert it to an energy source.

Cat® landfill gas generator sets are designed to:

  • Extend equipment life and maintenance intervals for landfill applications
  • Deliver improved performance and reliability
  • Offer lower operating and maintenance costs
  • Reduce environmental impact

Converting this gas helps to reduce odors and other risks that have been associated with landfill gas emissions. Also, this reduces the need for non-renewable energy resources like coal and oil and helps reduce emissions of air pollutants that contribute to local smog and acid rain. Landfill gas projects are also important in helping to reduce global climate change because they help reduce methane emissions, which is even more potent than carbon dioxide.
