Carolina Cat has the capability to repair all makes, models and types of medium and heavy-duty trucks, including specialty emergency vehicles. We recently assisted a customer with a unique emergency response vehicle. The Asheville Fire Department and Buncombe County EMS collaborated on a joint project for an emergency response triage bus. This bus consists of approximately 16 beds with a nurse’s station in the middle. The bus was built to respond to numerous emergency situations where care is needed onsite.
The emergency services bus was brought to our truck shop in Asheville for service and mentioned the onboard generator was not operating correctly. The truck shop sent the generator to the Carolina Cat Power Systems team for further review to determine the issue. They conducted some troubleshooting on the generator and determined the generator end had faulted and would need to be replaced. We completed the work and returned for installation on the bus.
After completing this work, the customer mentioned that they were not happy with the build of the existing automatic transfer switch that came with the bus. They indicated that they wanted to replace with a manual switch. In working on this solution, the Power Systems and EVS team found that the manufacturer of the existing switch was no longer supported the product as they were no longer in business. The Carolina Cat team took measurements of the existing cubicle for the switch and sourced a manual solution that would fit in this space.
The new manual switch was installed and tested for nearly a day and half to ensure it was operating properly. The installing technician, David, even went so far as to utilize his fabrication skill to make a color matched custom switch cover to go over the new switch housing and allow for safe and proper operation.
